Overdose Reduction: XYL – Xylazine Testing Strips
What is Xyalzine?
Xylazine, also known by its street names: tranq dope, and zombie drug, is a central nervous system depressant that is currently FDA-approved for animal use only. Xylazine is used in veterinary medicine as an animal tranquilizer.
As it is solely formulated as a veterinary tranquilizer, there is no approved application for human use. Humans who have used illicit xylazine have experienced slowed heart rate, respiratory depression, low blo,od pressure, and hypothermia, and some have slipped into a coma. It has been identified as an adulterant with illicit drug use in Puerto Rico in the early 2000s.
Today, there are increasing reports of the prevalence of xylazine in the community. Overdose deaths with traces of xylazine found within their system. This has been occurring mainly due to the insertion of xylazine as a cutting agent by illicit drug markets. As a result, xylazine is being found in drug samples as the illicit drug supply likely contains illicit xylazine.
As some drug users do not realize that xylazine has been used as a cutting agent by the drug trade, many recreational drug users have consumed the drug unaware. As xylazine is not an opioid, some opioid treatments will not work as effectively to stop all of its side effects such as slowed breathing.
Xylazine-associated deaths have alerted both community members and public officials to the dangers of consuming this drug as the effects of xylazine can render a person comatose. Moreover, skin lesions and deteriorating tissue has been reported among users who have a history of injection drug use.
